Wendy Dimond, Animal Fair, PETaPOTTY, SKYBARk, Los Angeles Loves
Animals, Los Angeles, California, pet owner

Nov 6, 2009
Culturally, Los Angeles, California is one of the most diverse areas in the United States. Within the boarders of Los Angeles, people from over 130 countries speak more than 200 languages, which led to the creation of diverse and historical enclaves in the minority-majority city. Chinatown, Koreatown, Little Armenia, Little India, Thai Town, and Little Ethiopia are just some of the ethnic enclaves of Los Angeles, but no area garners more attention to the Los Angeles tourist than Hollywood. Because Los Angeles is home to the Hollywood elite, it is also home to the canine elite, therefore producing a fervent demand in an innovative pet marketplace. Being the home of many privileged pets, Los Angeles offers a ravishing marketplace for the tourist, with a stunning variety of memorable activities for the pet … and its owner. With so many pets in Los Angeles, the city might even see the creation of a new enclave known as Dog Town.

Pets and owners alike can enjoy the style and elegance of Chateau Marmont. Photos courtesy of L.A. Ink/TLC, Rover Kennels and Chateau Marmutt.
Other hotels in Los Angeles that welcome pets with open arms include the Hilton (hilton.com), Residence Inn by Marriott (residenceinn.com), the Embassy Suites (embassysuites.com) and the historic Chateau Marmont Hotel & Bungalows (chateaumarmont.com or chateaumarmutt.com). If you happen to have walked into Chateau Marmutt accidentally, don’t be surprised, the pet specialty store is a canine take on the classic West Hollywood hotel, and a great spot to visit with your pet. Chateau Marmutt’s owner Michelle Rivera started the dog day care and boutique, she saw a great need for a premiere dog hangout where dogs could socialize with one another. Rivera told Animal Fair that she followed the policy “if you build it, they will come,” and that policy has worked famously. Chateau Marmutt’s clientele list looks like that of any exclusive Hollywood hotel. Britney Spears, Halle Berry, Beyonce and Mark McGrath are just some of the celebrities that let their animals loose at Marmutt. Rivera believes in exemplary customer service, telling Animal Fair, “anything that you want we’ll get. If you don’t see it here, I’ll find it for you.” So if your pet wants to schmooze with Los Angeles celebridogs, Chateau Marmutt is the place to be, Rivera just asks “no paw-o-graphs please.”

Other great attractions to visit with your pet can be as easy as a walk down Hollywood Boulevard. Pets are welcome (as long as they are good in crowds) to strut down the Hollywood Walk of Fame where almost 15 blocks of sidewalk are dedicated to stars. If you want to hit the town with your dog, check out SkyBark (SkyBark.com), “the pet’s place to chill,” a unique bar is all about pet nightlife and offers a 360 degree view of Los Angeles. At SkyBark, you can “have some drinks, relax and not worry about Fifi and Fido back at home.” SkyBark is equipped with PETaPOTTY (petapotty.com) technology allowing your pet “ample potty space” while you can relax worry-free at the bar. For the devoted pet lover, there is no better hotspot in LA than SkyBark, just be aware that the “doggie dress code” is “strictly enforced.” Read The Full Story

Back in the ’70s, when singer Alicia Bridges was belting out her hit “I Love the Nightlife” and nightclub owner Steve Rubell had New York City trendoids on the velvet ropes outside his famous Studio 54 — a scene that forever encapsulated the night fever frenzy of the disco era — no-one could have possibly forecast that today’s party animals would, in fact, be animals. Dogs to be exact.

These days, many pooches around the country lead a very active social life after dark and the trend is definitely growing. And, if Rubell is the name most associated with the nightlife of the ’70s, then Los Angeles businessman Brandon Hochman must take today’s credit for putting dogs in the nightlife mix.

Hochman’s personal pet peeve was that he loved the L.A. party scene, but was troubled that he couldn’t take his own pooches Mish Mash, a Maltipoo, Lucy the Labrador and Baxter the Pug with him for a drink and a good time.

After traveling the world as a professional snowboarder, Brandon Hochman was frustrated. There weren’t enough places he could go with Mish Mash, his beloved Malti-poo. So when Hochman returned to L.A., he created Sky Bark, a bar/lounge downtown specifically designed for dog owners who want to enjoy the city’s nightlife without leaving their furry friends at home. The club has an extremely irregular schedule — events are usually themed and word gets out through Sky Bark’s Web site — but the dog parties are a spectacle. Guests enjoy 360-degree views of the city from Sky Bark’s rooftop bar, dancing the night away on two dance floors with other dog lovers. There’s usually live music, with DJs, catered snacks and a 3,000-square-foot doggy play area. Canine attendees are treated to Sky Bark’s specialty drink, the “Muttini,” a combination of chicken broth and vitamin water served in a martini glass. Fresh grass is installed for each event, allowing dogs to do their business without having to leave the lounge. Earlier this year, Sky Bark worked with MTV2’s Rob and Big to host an event for Meaty the bulldog’s 14th “barkday,” which featured an ice sculpture of Meaty himself. Other events have included doggy fashion shows, sample sales and a “Woofer” Ball, with proceeds from silent auctions donated to local animal-rescue centers. Fido has had a long day. So buy him a stiff Muttini and ask him for a dance.
updated 7:01 a.m. PT, Fri., May. 30, 2008

Consequently, he decided to open L.A.’s first doggie night club appropriately named SkyBark on the rooftop of his downtown offices, with unique doggie restrooms as part of the master plan — Hochman invented the Pet-a-Potty, an indoor pet toilet that allows pets to take indoor bathroom breaks. This grass sod system can be installed anywhere — nightclubs, theatres, hotels — wherever dogs are.

When SkyBark’s doors opened in 2005, California’s canines were howling to rock and roll on a special 3,000-square-foot lawn doggie dance floor, lap up “muttinis” and set a precedent nationwide.

The venue with a stunning 360 degree view of the city skyline has a full bar, DJ’s spinning the latest music and a wonderful mix of celebrities and pet lovers from all over Southern California.

“It’s not just about having a fun evening out with your dog,” says Hochman. “The covert charge from every event is donated to an animal charity and different rescue groups benefit from each event. This way we are sharing the wealth amongst all those in need.”

To get on the guest list is simple; anyone with a well-trained pooch can attend. Concierges at pet-friendly hotels are alerted in advance of parties so that travelers with dogs can plan ahead. Alternatively, anyone can sign up for the SkyBark newsletter on SkyBark.com which provides information on forthcoming events.

SkyBark has become a fixture on the Los Angeles social scene, last year winning awards for the best pet service in L.A., and was named “the hottest new club in Los Angeles in 2007” by the National Enquirer. Read full article MSNBC

Coal’s guests were treated to a special screening of the “Bark-Along Bone-us Feature,” a Disney first especially for dogs, followed by an exclusive after-party at LA’s hottest K- 9 spot, Sky Bark.
